A cooking class is one of the most rewarding cultural experiences in Bali. Combined with a traditional market visit and private driver, it becomes a full-day food adventure that gives you skills to recreate Balinese flavors at home.
The day starts early with your driver taking you to a traditional morning market (pasar pagi). Markets like Ubud Market or Gianyar Market open at dawn and are bursting with fresh vegetables, spices, meats, and flowers. Your driver or cooking class instructor guides you through the stalls.
After the market, drive to the cooking school. Most are located in beautiful settings: rice field pavilions near Ubud, jungle kitchens near Tegallalang, or traditional compound kitchens in villages. Classes run 3-4 hours and typically include 5-7 dishes.
Common dishes you will learn: nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), sate lilit (minced seafood satay), lawar (mixed vegetable and meat dish), sambal matah (raw shallot chili), and black rice pudding dessert.
After the cooking class and lunch (eating what you cooked), your driver can take you to afternoon activities. Popular combinations include a cooking class plus Tegallalang Rice Terraces, or a cooking class plus a waterfall visit.
