Bali coral reefs offer world-class snorkeling that you can access directly from the beach. A private driver gets you to the best spots, many of which are in remote locations that are difficult to reach by public transport.
Amed on the east coast is Bali best shore snorkeling destination. The Japanese shipwreck sits in shallow water just offshore, teeming with colorful fish and coral. The drive from south Bali takes 2.5-3 hours, making it a full day trip.
Tulamben, famous for the USAT Liberty shipwreck, offers incredible visibility and marine life just 30 meters from the beach. Both snorkelers and divers can enjoy this WWII wreck in shallow water.
Blue Lagoon in Padangbai is closer to south Bali (about 90 minutes) and offers a sheltered bay with good coral and fish. Equipment can be rented from beach vendors for Rp 50.000.
Closer options include Tanjung Benoa in Nusa Dua (30 minutes from most hotels) and Sanur reef (accessible by jukung boat from the beach). These are less spectacular but more convenient for short trips.
Your private driver drops you at the beach, waits with your valuables in the locked car, and picks you up whenever you are done. For Amed and Tulamben day trips, the full day driver rate of Rp 600.000-700.000 applies.
